1st Annual Yancy Spencer Memorial Surf/Sup Fest

It’s been a year already since we lost Yancy Spencer III. Yancy died after surfing his favorite spot in California on February 14, 2011.

Innerlight Surf & Skate is inviting the public to come gather and celebrate the life of Yancy with a day of surfing, paddle boarding and enjoying the beach. The event takes place on Feb. 18 at “The Cross” on Pensacola Beach, 850 Fort Pickens Road, starting at 11 a.m.

Everyone is invited to eat chili and watch a commemorative movie at Emerald Dolphin after the beach event.

Congrats Juan Rodriguez: 2012 Surfboard Shape Off Winner

He did it again! Juan Rodriguez from One Word Surf, replicates the Greg Noll Cat and wins this year’s Annual Florida Shape Off.

So here’s the skinny on the Greg Noll 1967 Cat that the shappers are attempting to replicated. The board has 2 channels on the bottom that run about a foot and 1/2 to the rail. With a stooped out nose step back.

Due to the difficulty of this model, an extra 15 minutes have been added to the 2 hour time limit.

Tomorrow, Jeff Haney is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., Juan Rodriguez will be 12:30 to allow for the extra fifteen.

2012 Surboard Shape Off – A Tribute to Greg Noll

That’s right. For our 5th Anniversary, we are honoring Greg Noll “Da Bull”. The board to beshaped will be a Greg Noll cat. This was originally going to be a “West Coast v. East Coast” theme, but the California shapers bowed out because of scheduling conflicts during the show.

Never fear, the East Coast is here! So let’s here it for our Florida boys! The line-up is: Juan Rodriguez of One World Surf Designs, Stu Sharpe of Sharpe Surfboards, Jeff Haney of Ocean Image and Jessie Villarreal of SurfToyz.

The contest will be held Thursday January 12th and Friday January 13th, starting at 10 a.m. with the judging starting immediately after the last shaper is done.

Mike Whisnant wins 4th Shape Off

It took Ricky Carroll nearly 2.5 hours and calling in fellow shaper Stretch to figure out who the winner of this year’s shape off would be. Every point that could be measured, from nose to tail, got measured. This year’s model was one of the last surfboards the late Joe Shriver made for his son. And it came down to a difference of 1/16 of an inch.

Mike Whistnant was shocked when his name came out of the manila envelope. “When I saw the strip of paper with my name, I was like ‘No, it can’t be’. I really did not expect to win.”

The first runner up, Adam Warden, was also stoked as well as surprised. He graciously accepted to take Joe Johnson’s slot on Friday, when Joe, due to unforeseen circumstances, was unable to shape. Very enthusiastic and a bit nervous since it had been some time since he had picked up a planer, Adam went as far as placing the blank on the ground and stepping on it to put the pressure dings, just like the model copy had.

Just like the other years, the winner was handed the perpetual Florida Shape Off trophy which he gets to keep until the next shape off. But this year, the Surf Expo provided a beautiful, crystal trophy for the winner to keep. Another pleasant surprise from the Surf Expo, was that the winner received a free booth for the next show. An immense thank you to Vicky Vasil and the Surf Expo crew for making this event bigger and better.

We also want to thank all the shapers that participated in this event. Though there can only be one winner, you are all winners and heroes of surfing to us all.

2011 Shape Off: a tribute to Joe Shriver

Join us at the top of the hall in Surf for the 4th annual Florida Shape Off. Stu Sharpe, who participated in the 1st Shape Off returns for a shot as the winner. Stu will be shaping on Thursday and so will Richie Buehn and Shawn Vecchione. Joe Johnson, Bruce Ragan and Mike Whistnant will be shaping on Friday.

This year, Juan Rodriguez, winner of the 1st Shape Off, will be joining Ricky Carroll to judge which shaper comes closer to replicating the model board.
